Luboš Smrčka (born 1961) is a Czech economist with a history as rich as that of his native country in Central Europe. Under the communist regime, he was a biologist focusing on virus separation. He wrote his first scientific works concerning the topic in the mid 1980s. In the early 1990s, following the anti-communist Velvet Revolution, he left the Czech Academy of Sciences to join hundreds of thousands of Czechs in their private business undertakings, becoming a tax advisor, stock broker as well as a court-certified expert in business appraisals. As a trustee in bankruptcy, he was in charge of wrapping up a number of companies and, following his authorization by the state, he assisted in the identification and recovery of property that had been stolen from some privatization and pension funds in the Czech Republic in the 1990s. In recent years he has worked as a lecturer and scientist at the University of Economics in Prague. Mr. Smrčka has written several books on family finance, while also dealing with the issues of insolvency law and the impacts of demographics on economic systems. His commentaries and economic analyses are published in one of the most respected Czech newspapers, Hospodářské noviny daily. In 2011, he became a member of an advisory team to the government for the reform of the Act on Expert Institutes that represent an important part of the Czech legal order. He also participates in activities of not-for-profit organizations that assist people in financial and social difficulties.
